MAX3100CEE+T

The MAX3100CEE+T from Analog Devices is a versatile Universal Asynchronous Receiver Transmitter (UART) designed for compact microcontroller-based systems. It communicates with the host microcontroller via an SPI™/MICROWIRE™ interface and is housed in a 16-pin QSOP package.

This UART supports asynchronous I/O for RS-232, RS-485, IR, and opto-isolated data links, including an IrDA timing mode for infrared communication. It integrates a crystal oscillator and a baud-rate generator capable of software-programmable rates from 300 baud to 230k baud. A low-power shutdown mode reduces quiescent current to 10µA while still detecting receiver activity.

Key features include an 8-word FIFO buffer to minimize processor overhead, flexible interrupt capabilities with four maskable sources (including 9-bit address recognition), and two hardware-handshaking control lines. The device operates from a +2.7V to +5.5V supply voltage and is suitable for applications such as handheld instruments, intelligent instrumentation, and small networks in HVAC or building control systems.

The MAX3100CEE+T is available in a 16-QSOP package, designed for surface mounting. Its Schmitt-trigger inputs are suitable for opto-coupler interfaces, and the TX and RTS outputs can sink 25mA for driving opto-couplers.
