MAX3100CEE

The MAX3100CEE is a universal asynchronous receiver transmitter (UART) optimized for small microcontroller-based systems. It utilizes an SPI™/MICROWIRE™ interface for communication and is housed in a compact 16-pin QSOP package. The asynchronous I/O is suitable for RS-232, RS-485, IR, and opto-isolated data links, with an IrDA timing mode for easy IR-link communication.

This controller includes a crystal oscillator and a baud-rate generator capable of software-programmable divider ratios for common baud rates from 300 to 230k baud. It operates with a supply voltage range of 2.7V to 5.5V and draws a low operating current of 150µA. A shutdown mode further reduces quiescent current to 10µA while still detecting receiver activity.

Key features include an 8-word FIFO buffer to minimize processor overhead, flexible interrupt capabilities with four maskable sources (including 9-bit address recognition), and two hardware-handshaking control lines. The MAX3100CEE is designed for applications such as handheld instruments, intelligent instrumentation, small networks in HVAC or building control, and low-cost IR data links.

The device is available in a 16-QSOP package, offering a compact solution for space-constrained designs. Its Schmitt-trigger inputs are suitable for opto-coupler interfaces, and the TX and RTS outputs can sink 25mA for driving opto-couplers.
