The Texas Instruments MAX232N is a versatile dual channel RS-232 line driver and receiver. It is designed to operate from a single 5V power supply, utilizing charge-pump capacitors to generate the necessary TIA/EIA-232-F voltage levels. Each of the two receivers can convert RS-232 inputs to 5V TTL/CMOS levels, featuring a typical threshold of 1.3V and 500mV hysteresis, with the ability to accept ±30V inputs.

 

Each of the two drivers converts TTL/CMOS input levels into TIA/EIA-232-F levels. The device supports a maximum data rate of 120Kbps and operates within a logic voltage range of 4.5V to 5.5V. The typical output voltage is ±9V, and it includes ±2kV ESD protection (HBM).

 

This transceiver is suitable for applications requiring serial communication interfaces. It is available in a 16-PDIP through-hole package, making it convenient for breadboarding and prototyping, as well as for through-hole PCB assembly. The operating temperature range is from 0°C to 70°C.
