The MAX1873TEEE+ by Analog Devices is a low-cost, simple switch-mode charger controller designed for efficiently charging 2-, 3-, or 4-series lithium-ion cells at up to 4A. It also supports charging 6-, 9-, or 10-cell NiCd or NiMH battery packs, making it suitable for multi-chemistry charger designs.
This IC provides regulated charging current and voltage with less than ±0.75% total voltage error at the battery terminals. It features an external P-channel MOSFET in a step-down DC-DC configuration for efficient battery charging. An additional control loop limits input current, minimizing AC adapter size and cost. An analog voltage output proportional to charging current is supplied for monitoring purposes.
The MAX1873TEEE+ operates with an input voltage up to 28V and offers a low dropout voltage of 200mV with 100% duty cycle. It includes adjustable charging current and a 300kHz PWM oscillator to reduce noise. The device is available in a space-saving 16-pin QSOP package, ideal for compact designs.
Applications for the MAX1873TEEE+ include notebook computers, portable internet tablets, hand-held instruments, portable desktop assistants (PDAs), and desktop cradle chargers.
