The MAX186CCWP+T from Analog Devices (formerly Maxim Integrated) is a versatile 12-bit data acquisition system offering 8 channels for analog input. This device integrates a high-bandwidth track/hold circuit and a serial interface, enabling high conversion speeds with ultra-low power consumption. It supports single +5V or dual ±5V supply operation and features software-configurable analog inputs for unipolar/bipolar and single-ended/differential modes.
The serial interface is compatible with SPI, QSPI, and MICROWIRE standards, allowing direct connection to microcontrollers without external logic. A serial strobe output is also provided for direct connection to TMS320 digital signal processors. The MAX186/MAX188 series can utilize an internal clock or an external serial interface clock for successive-approximation A/D conversions, with the serial interface capable of operating beyond 4MHz when using the internal clock.
The MAX186 variant includes an internal 4.096V reference, while the MAX188 requires an external reference. Both devices feature a reference-buffer amplifier to simplify gain trimming. Power management is handled by a hard-wired SHDN pin and two software-selectable power-down modes. Accessing the serial interface automatically powers up the devices, and their quick turn-on time allows for shutdown between conversions, reducing supply current to under 10µA at reduced sampling rates.
Available in a 20-SOIC package, the MAX186CCWP+T is suitable for applications such as portable data logging, battery-powered instruments, and high-accuracy process control. Its compact footprint and low power consumption make it ideal for space-constrained and power-sensitive designs.
