The MAX1856EUB+ by Analog Devices is a versatile special purpose regulator designed to generate SLIC (ringer and off-hook) power supplies. It utilizes off-the-shelf transformers to produce various output voltages, including -24V and -72V dual outputs, -48V for IP phones, or negative voltages up to -185V for MEMS bias supplies. The output voltages are adjustable via an external voltage divider.
With a wide operating voltage range from 3V to 28V, the MAX1856EUB+ is suitable for cost-sensitive applications such as xDSL, cable modems, set-top boxes, and FTTH CPE. It operates from a low-cost, unregulated DC power supply and provides low audio-band noise for talk battery, while effectively handling ring trip conditions. The switching frequency can be set externally between 100kHz and 500kHz, or synchronized to an external clock for noise-sensitive applications.
This device employs a flyback topology for high transformer utilization and low ripple current. Internal soft-start minimizes startup stress, and current-mode control eliminates the need for external loop compensation. The MAX1856EUB+ is available in a 10-pin uMAX package and operates within a temperature range of -40°C to 85°C.
