The MAX1698EUB+T from Maxim Integrated is an efficient step-up current regulator specifically designed for driving white or color LEDs. It is ideal for applications such as large LED backlit displays in PDAs and laptop computers, offering greater simplicity, lower cost, higher efficiency, and longer bulb life compared to traditional fluorescent or electroluminescent lamps.
This switch-mode boost controller regulates LED current rather than output voltage. It drives series-connected LEDs with a controlled current measured using a typical 15 Ω sense resistor. LED current control and dimming are managed via an adjust input (ADJ). For higher light output requirements, multiple LED banks can be connected in parallel, supporting up to 5W total output power. The MAX1698A variant features a higher and more accurately specified CS current limit for applications demanding 5W or more.
Both devices are supplied in a space-saving 10-pin µMAX package, occupying half the space of an 8-pin SO package. An evaluation kit, MAX1698EVKIT, is available to expedite design processes. The MAX1698EUB+T is suitable for battery-powered backlight applications, including LCD panels, notebook PCs, handy terminals, and PDAs.
