The MAX1618MUB from Analog Devices (formerly Maxim Integrated) is a precise digital thermometer designed to report the temperature of a remote sensor. This sensor can be a diode-connected transistor, such as a 2N3904, or an on-chip diode within other ICs like microprocessors. It offers an accuracy of ±3°C for multiple transistor manufacturers without calibration.
The device utilizes a 2-wire serial interface that supports standard System Management Bus (SMBus) commands for programming alarm thresholds and reading temperature data. The data format is 7 bits plus sign, with each bit corresponding to 1°C in two’s complement format. Measurements can be performed automatically at a 16Hz conversion rate or in a single-shot mode. The thermostat mode configures the ALERT output for fan control, acting as an interrupt or temperature reset, with configurable active high or low polarity.
Key features include a single channel for measuring remote CPU temperature, no calibration requirement, and programmable under/overtemperature alarms. It operates within a +3V to +5.5V supply range and consumes a typical standby supply current of 3µA, with a maximum of 900µA in autoconvert mode. The MAX1618MUB is available in a compact 10-pin µMAX package, suitable for surface mounting.
Applications for the MAX1618MUB include desktop and notebook computers, telecom equipment, smart battery packs, test and measurement devices, LAN servers, multichip modules, and industrial controls.
