The LTC3586/LTC3586-1 from Analog Devices are highly integrated power management and battery charger ICs designed for Li-Ion/Polymer battery applications. They incorporate a high efficiency current-limited switching PowerPath manager with automatic load prioritization, a battery charger, an ideal diode, and four synchronous switching regulators (two bucks, one buck-boost, and one boost).
These ICs are specifically designed for USB applications, with the switching power manager automatically limiting input current to 100mA or 500mA for USB or 1A for adapter-powered applications. The switching architecture minimizes power loss and heat compared to linear chargers, easing thermal constraints. The dual buck regulators can each provide up to 400mA, the buck-boost can deliver 1A, and the boost regulator offers at least 800mA output current.
The LTC3586/LTC3586-1 are available in a compact, low-profile 38-pin 4mm x 6mm QFN package, suitable for space-constrained designs. Key features include a full-featured Li-Ion/Polymer battery charger with a 1.5A maximum charge current and a float voltage of 4.2V (LTC3586) or 4.1V (LTC3586-1).
Applications for this device include digital still cameras, HDD-based MP3 players, PDAs, GPS, PMPs, and other USB-based handheld products. The device operates over a temperature range of -40°C to 85°C and is surface-mount compatible.
