The LT4356IMS-1 from Analog Devices is a surge stopper IC that safeguards loads against high voltage transients. It achieves this by regulating the output during overvoltage events, such as automotive load dumps, through the control of an external N-channel MOSFET. The output is clamped to a safe level, allowing connected loads to continue functioning.
Key features include a wide operating voltage range from 4V to 80V and reverse input protection down to -60V. The LT4356 also incorporates overcurrent protection by monitoring the voltage drop across an external sense resistor. An internal amplifier limits the current sense voltage to 50mV. In fault conditions, a timer is initiated, and if the condition persists, a fault pin signals an impending shutdown, eventually turning off the MOSFET.
This device is available in 12-pin DFN, 10-pin MSOP, and 16-pin SO packages, suitable for surface mount applications. The LT4356-1 variant offers a low shutdown current of 7µA, making it ideal for battery-powered systems and intrinsic safety applications. The LT4356-2 offers a slightly higher shutdown current of 60µA but keeps the auxiliary amplifier active for functions like undervoltage lockout.
