The Intersil ICL7660S is a Super Voltage Converter, a monolithic CMOS IC designed for efficient voltage conversion. It supports an input supply voltage range from 1.5V to 12V, providing complementary output voltages from -1.5V to -12V. This device is an improved replacement for the industry-standard ICL7660, offering lower supply current and an extended operating voltage range up to 12V.

 

Key features include a guaranteed minimum power efficiency of 96% and an improved minimum open circuit voltage conversion efficiency of 99%. The ICL7660S requires only two non-critical external capacitors for its charge pump and charge reservoir functions, simplifying circuit design. It can also be configured as a voltage doubler, capable of generating up to 22.8V with a 12V input, or used as a voltage multiplier or divider.

 

The internal circuitry includes a series DC power supply regulator, an RC oscillator, a voltage level translator, and four output power MOS switches. The oscillator typically operates at 10kHz for a 5.0V input, but this frequency can be adjusted externally. The 'LV' terminal can be tied to GND to bypass the internal regulator for improved low-voltage operation, or left floating at medium to high voltages (3.5V to 12V) to prevent latchup.

 

Available in PDIP and SOIC packages, the ICL7660S is suitable for applications requiring negative voltage supplies, such as data acquisition systems, instrumentation, and RS232 power supplies. It also functions as a supply splitter.
