The FXOS8700CQR1 from NXP Semiconductors is a highly integrated 6-axis inertial measurement unit (IMU) that combines a 3-axis linear accelerometer and a 3-axis magnetometer into a single package. This device is designed for a wide range of motion-sensing applications, offering a complete e-compass hardware solution.
It features dynamically selectable acceleration full-scale ranges of ±2 g, ±4 g, or ±8 g, and a fixed magnetic measurement range of ±1200 μT. The output data rate (ODR) is user-selectable from 1.563 Hz to 800 Hz for each sensor, with interleaved data available up to 400 Hz in hybrid mode. The accelerometer boasts 14-bit ADC resolution, while the magnetometer offers 16-bit resolution.
Designed for low power consumption, the FXOS8700CQR1 operates with a VDD supply voltage range of 1.95 V to 3.6 V and a VDDIO voltage range of 1.62 V to 3.6 V. It includes embedded programmable functions for acceleration events like freefall, motion detection, and tap detection, as well as magnetic events such as threshold detection and autonomous hard-iron calibration.
The device is housed in a 16-QFN (3x3) package, suitable for surface mounting. It is guaranteed to operate over an extended temperature range of –40 °C to +85 °C, making it robust for various environmental conditions. Applications include security systems, smart home devices, robotics, UAVs, medical monitoring, and user interface controls.
