The DS3658N from Texas Instruments is a quad peripheral driver IC designed for applications requiring low operating power, high breakdown voltage, high output current, and low ON-state voltage. Each of the four outputs can sink up to 600 mA, with a combined package capability of 2.4A. The device features a high breakdown voltage of 70V, though inductive loads should be clamped to 35V or less to prevent latch-up.
Key features include TTL compatible inputs with high impedance, low standby power of 10 mW typical, and low output ON voltage of 350 mV typical at 600 mA. The outputs are open collector and may be tied together for increased current capacity. Integrated output clamp diodes provide protection for inductive flyback.
This driver is suitable for applications such as relay drivers, lamp drivers, solenoid drivers, and stepping motor drivers. It is supplied in a 16-PDIP package suitable for through-hole mounting and offers improved power dissipation due to its construction.
The DS3658N also incorporates circuitry for glitch-free power up/down operation and a fail-safe feature that places the output in a high impedance state when the input is open. Its NPN inputs draw minimal current, allowing direct drive from CMOS devices.
