Key features include receive clock/data recovery, transmit waveshaping, and an optional jitter attenuator. The device supports DS3 (M23 or C-Bit) and E3 (G.751 or G.832) framing formats. It includes a built-in HDLC controller with a 256-byte FIFO for overhead byte insertion/extraction and an on-chip BERT for pattern generation and analysis.

 

This transceiver interfaces to 75-ohm coaxial cable and uses 1:2 transformers on both transmit and receive paths. It offers flexible overhead insertion/extraction and various loopback modes. The integrated clock rate adapter generates necessary clock frequencies from a single reference source. The DS3170N is compatible with 8-/16-bit parallel and slave SPI serial microprocessor interfaces.

 

Applications for the DS3170N include access concentrators, multiservice access platforms (MSAPs), routers, switches, SONET/SDH equipment, PBXs, test equipment, and integrated-access devices (IADs). It is housed in a 100-pin CSBGA package and operates from a 3.3V supply with 5V tolerant I/O.
