The DS2715Z from Analog Devices (formerly Maxim Integrated) is an integrated circuit designed for charging 1 to 10 NiMH cells in series. It is well-suited for cost-sensitive applications where battery packs are either internal or external to the main device.
This charge controller offers several features for safe and reliable charging, including pre-conditioning for depleted cells, FAST-CHARGE mode up to a 2C rate, and TOPOFF modes for cell conditioning. Charge termination is achieved using the dT/dt technique, which requires an external thermistor. Additional safety monitoring includes over-temperature, under-temperature, and over-voltage detection, along with a user-selectable charge timer.
The DS2715Z can regulate charge current using either linear control or switch-mode control. It also features a discharge mode that allows the device to enter a low-power sleep state (less than 10µA) while the cell pack is being discharged. An LED output is provided to display the charge state.
Applications for the DS2715Z include portable DVD players, portable televisions, handheld gaming devices, test equipment, and handheld POS terminals. The component is supplied in a compact 16-pin SO package suitable for surface mounting.
