DS2438Z

The DS2438Z from Analog Devices (Maxim Integrated) is a smart battery monitor IC that integrates several functions crucial for battery pack management. It utilizes a unique 1-Wire interface, requiring only a single port pin for communication, simplifying system design. This device includes an on-chip temperature sensor, eliminating the need for external thermistors.

The DS2438Z features an integrated A/D converter for monitoring battery voltage and current, facilitating end-of-charge and end-of-discharge determination. It also incorporates a current accumulator for fuel gauging and an elapsed time meter. For storing battery-specific data such as chemistry, capacity, and assembly date, the IC provides 40 bytes of nonvolatile EEPROM memory.

Designed for a wide operating temperature range of -40°C to +85°C, the DS2438Z is suitable for applications including portable computers, cellular phones, consumer electronics, and handheld instrumentation. It is available in an 8-SOIC surface mount package.

Each DS2438Z contains a unique silicon serial number, allowing multiple devices to coexist on the same 1-Wire bus. This enables simultaneous charging or use of multiple battery packs within a system. The IC operates with a power supply voltage ranging from 2.4V to 10.0V.
