The DS1232 MicroMonitor chip by Dallas Semiconductor is an integrated circuit designed to ensure the reliable operation of microprocessor-based systems. It monitors three vital conditions: power supply status, software execution, and external override.
The device features a precision temperature-compensated reference and comparator circuit to monitor the VCC power supply. It detects out-of-tolerance conditions and generates a reset signal, holding it active for a minimum of 250 ms after VCC returns to normal to allow for system stabilization. The power supply monitoring accuracy can be set to 5% or 10% by the TOL pin.
Additionally, the DS1232 includes a pushbutton reset input that debounces the switch and guarantees an active reset pulse width of 250 ms minimum. It also incorporates a watchdog timer function. An internal timer forces reset signals to an active state if a strobe input is not driven low before timeout. The watchdog timer can be configured for timeout settings of approximately 150 ms, 600 ms, and 1.2 seconds.
Available in space-saving 8-pin mini-DIP and optional 16-pin SOIC surface mount packages, the DS1232 operates within an industrial temperature range of -40°C to +85°C. This chip eliminates the need for discrete components, simplifying system design and reducing board space.
