The DS1213D SmartSocket from Dallas Semiconductor is a 32-pin, 600 mil DIP socket that integrates a CMOS controller circuit and an embedded lithium energy source. This device accepts standard 32K x 8 or 128K x 8 JEDEC bytewide CMOS static RAMs, converting them into non-volatile memory. It automatically monitors VCC and switches to its internal lithium energy source during power loss, unconditionally enabling write protection to prevent data corruption.
Key features include data retention for over 10 years with proper RAM selection and an operating temperature range of 0°C to 70°C. The socket allows for upgrading RAM capacity from 32K x 8 to 128K x 8 and uses proven gas-tight socket contacts. The SmartSocket occupies no additional board space compared to the RAM alone, as it uses only pins 22, 30, and 32 for RAM control, passing all other pins straight through.
This component is suitable for applications requiring nonvolatile storage, such as industrial equipment, computers, embedded systems, data loggers, and telecommunications hardware. It is mounted via a through-hole process and operates within a supply voltage range of 4.75V to 5.5V. Note that this product is considered obsolete and is not recommended for new designs.
