The DD-681, officially the USS Hopewell, was a Fletcher-class destroyer that entered service with the United States Navy in 1943. This vessel played a significant role in the Pacific Theater during World War II, participating in major operations including the invasions of the Philippines, Iwo Jima, and Okinawa. Its duties involved providing crucial fire support and screening larger naval vessels from enemy threats.

Following its World War II service, the Hopewell was decommissioned but later recommissioned for service during the Korean War. During this period, it conducted shore bombardments and patrols. The destroyer continued its service into the early years of the Vietnam War before its final decommissioning in 1970. The ship was ultimately scrapped in 1972.

Historically, the USS Hopewell (DD-681) was named after Pollard Hopewell, a midshipman who perished at the Battle of Lake Erie during the War of 1812. As a Fletcher-class destroyer, it belonged to one of the most successful and numerous destroyer classes built for the US Navy during World War II. The ship's service record includes participation in major Pacific campaigns such as the Marianas, Leyte Gulf, and Okinawa operations. Notably, on May 14, 1945, while supporting operations off Okinawa, the USS Hopewell sustained damage from a kamikaze attack but the crew successfully saved the ship. It also provided fire support for assaults at Saipan, Tinian, and Iwo Jima.
