The Texas Instruments BQ24400DR is a programmable, monolithic IC for fast-charge management of nickel cadmium (NiCd) and nickel metal-hydride (NiMH) batteries in single or multi-cell applications. This switch-mode buck controller offers efficient charging with features like battery temperature monitoring, pre-charge qualification, and selectable top-off mode for maximum capacity.
Key electrical specifications include a maximum charge current of 2A, an input voltage range of 4V to 6V (absolute max 7V), and battery charge voltages from 0.95V to 8V. The control interface is standalone and RC-settable. The operating temperature range is -20°C to 70°C.
Packaged in an 8-SOIC surface mount configuration, the BQ24400DR is suitable for high-power, multi-cell nickel charger applications. It provides safe management of fast charge with termination by peak voltage, maximum temperature, and maximum charge time. Additional features include programmable trickle-charge mode, battery removal/insertion detection, and sleep mode for low power consumption.
