The BQ2050H Lithium Ion Power Gauge IC by Texas Instruments is engineered for battery-pack or in-system installation to maintain an accurate record of available battery capacity. This IC monitors voltage drop across a sense resistor to determine charge and discharge activity, applying compensations for temperature, self-discharge, and discharge rate.
Key features include a high-speed 5kb single-wire communication interface (HDQ bus) for critical battery parameters and direct drive for remaining capacity LEDs. The device operates with a low typical current of 120µA and a data retention current of less than 100nA, making it a low-cost battery management solution. The complete circuit can fit in as little as 12 square inches of PCB space.
The BQ2050H is housed in a 16-pin narrow SOIC package, suitable for surface mount applications. It supports automatic battery recalibration or learning during discharge cycles and can directly indicate nominal available capacity using a five-segment LED display.
