The BQ2014HSNTR from Texas Instruments is a low-cost battery management solution for NiCd and NiMH battery packs. This gas gauge IC accurately measures available battery capacity by monitoring the voltage drop across a sense resistor. It incorporates compensations for battery temperature, self-discharge, and discharge rate to provide reliable capacity information across various operating conditions.
The device supports 2-4 series cells and has a battery capacity range from 500 mAh to 6000 mAh. Key features include a Coulomb Counter for charge and discharge activity tracking and direct drive for remaining capacity LEDs. The high-speed 5kb/s single-wire HDQ bus interface allows for efficient communication with external charge controllers like the bq2004.
Packaged in a 16-pin narrow SOIC, the BQ2014HSNTR is suitable for surface mount applications. It operates within a temperature range of 0°C to 70°C and offers low operating current of 120µA typical, with less than 100nA data retention current. The IC automatically recalibrates battery capacity during discharge cycles and can directly indicate nominal available capacity using a five-segment LED display.
