The BQ2004PN from Texas Instruments is a versatile battery charger IC capable of fast charging and conditioning nickel cadmium (NiCd) or nickel-metal hydride (NiMH) batteries. It operates with an input voltage range of 4.5V to 5.5V and supports battery charge voltages up to 5.5V. The device utilizes a switch-mode buck control topology and offers features such as negative delta-V, PVD, dT/dt termination, and timing setup.
This IC integrates comprehensive fast charge control functions with high-speed switching power control circuitry. It can be used as a stand-alone charger or easily integrated into larger systems. The BQ2004PN provides pre-charge qualification based on temperature and voltage, and features configurable LED outputs to display battery and charge status. Termination conditions include maximum voltage, maximum temperature, and maximum time.
Designed for flexibility, the BQ2004PN includes optional top-off charge and pulsed current maintenance charging. It also offers a logic-level controlled low-power mode with less than 5µA standby current. The device is available in a 16-PDIP package and is suitable for through-hole mounting. It supports multi-chemistry battery types and offers constant or pulsed current control.
Note: This product is in the process of being discontinued. New designs should consider an alternate product.
