The Texas Instruments BQ2004 is a monolithic CMOS Fast Charge IC that provides comprehensive control functions for charging nickel cadmium and nickel-metal hydride batteries. It integrates high-speed switching power control circuitry and closed-loop current control, making it suitable for both stand-alone and system-integrated chargers.
The BQ2004 supports fast charging and conditioning, with pre-charge qualification for temperature and voltage. It offers configurable LED outputs to display battery and charge status. Fast charge termination can be achieved through various methods including temperature/time rate, peak voltage detection, negative delta voltage, maximum voltage, maximum temperature, and maximum time.
This IC can operate as a hysteretic PWM controller for switch-mode regulation or gate an external regulator. It includes optional top-off charge and pulsed current maintenance charging phases. For power saving, it features a logic-level controlled low-power mode with less than 5µA standby current.
The BQ2004 is available in 16-pin Narrow DIP or Narrow SOIC packages. It operates with an input voltage range of 4.5V to 5.5V and supports 1 to 4 series cells with a maximum charge current of 2A. The operating temperature range is -20°C to 70°C.
