The BQ2000T is a versatile, programmable integrated circuit from Texas Instruments designed for the safe management of fast charging for various battery chemistries, including Nickel Cadmium (NiCd), Nickel Metal Hydride (NiMH), and Lithium-Ion (Li-Ion). This IC is suitable for single- or multi-chemistry applications, offering efficient and simple charger designs through its high-frequency switching controller.
Key features include pre-charge qualification to detect shorted, damaged, or overheated cells, and multiple fast-charge termination criteria. For nickel chemistries, termination is achieved via ΔT/Δt (rate of temperature rise) or maximum temperature and charge time. For Li-Ion chemistries, termination is based on minimum current, maximum temperature, and maximum charge time. The device also supports a selectable top-off mode for maximizing NiMH battery capacity and a programmable trickle-charge mode for reviving deeply discharged batteries or for post-charge maintenance.
Safety is enhanced with built-in battery removal and insertion detection. The BQ2000T inhibits fast charge until battery voltage and temperature are within user-defined limits. For batteries below a low-voltage threshold, it employs trickle-charge conditioning. The IC supports a wide input voltage range from 4V to 6V, with an absolute maximum of 7V, and can manage battery charge voltages from 0V to 6V. It is available in TSSOP, SOIC, and PDIP packages, supporting surface mount and through-hole mounting types.
Applications for the BQ2000T include multi-chemistry chargers, nickel chargers, and high-power, multi-cell chargers. Its programmable nature allows for optimized charging algorithms tailored to specific battery types, ensuring accurate and safe termination of the fast-charge process.
