The BH1771GLC-E2 from ROHM Semiconductor combines an optical proximity sensor and a digital ambient light sensor into a single IC. The proximity sensor detects object approach by infrared LED light reflection and can drive up to three LEDs for touch-less motion detection. The ambient light sensor part measures illuminance from dark conditions up to direct sunlight, with a range of 1 to 65535 lx. This allows for adjustment of LCD display and keypad brightness, optimizing for lower current consumption or higher visibility.
The device supports an I2C bus interface, including f/s mode and Hs mode. It also features a power-down function for low current consumption and is compatible with a 1.8V logic interface. The ALS spectral responsibility closely approximates human eye response with a peak wavelength of typically 550nm. The proximity sensor has a configurable detection range of 10 to 100mm via the I2C bus and includes built-in ambient light cancellation.
Applications for the BH1771GLC-E2 include mobile phones, digital still cameras, portable game consoles, camcorders, car navigation systems, PDAs, and LCD displays. It is supplied in a 10-WLGA (2.8x2.8) surface mount package.
