The Microchip Technology AT86RF231-ZFR is a high-performance RF-CMOS 2.4 GHz radio transceiver IC targeted for IEEE 802.15.4, ZigBee, 6LoWPAN, RF4CE, SP100, WirelessHART, and ISM applications. It boasts an industry-leading link budget of 104 dB and a receiver sensitivity of -101 dBm, with programmable output power from -17 dBm up to +3 dBm.
This transceiver operates at ultra-low supply voltages from 1.8V to 3.6V and features ultra-low current consumption. It is optimized for low Bill of Materials (BoM) cost and ease of production, requiring few external components such as a crystal, capacitors, and an antenna. The device supports a maximum data rate of 2Mbps and utilizes O-QPSK modulation.
Designed for ease of use, the AT86RF231-ZFR features registers, frame buffer, and AES accessible through a fast SPI interface. It requires only two microcontroller GPIO lines and one interrupt pin. The transceiver includes special IEEE 802.15.4 hardware support, a MAC hardware accelerator, and an AES 128-bit hardware accelerator. It is available in a 32-pin Low-Profile QFN package (5 x 5 x 0.9 mm³) and is RoHS/Fully Green compliant. The operating temperature range is -40°C to +125°C.
