The ADT7470ARQZ-REEL from Analog Devices is a multichannel temperature sensor and PWM fan controller. It is designed to interface directly to an I2C bus and can monitor up to 10 daisy-chained TMP05 temperature sensors. The device also monitors and controls the speed of up to four fans independently, with PWM outputs for each fan under software control.
A FULL_SPEED input allows fans to be blasted to maximum speed via external hardware control under extreme thermal conditions or on system startup. An SMBALERT interrupt communicates error conditions such as fan underspeed and over-temperature measurements to the system service processor. Individual error conditions can be read from status registers over the I2C bus.
This controller operates within a supply voltage range of 3V to 5.5V and has an operating temperature range of -40°C to 125°C. It is housed in a 16-SSOP package and is suitable for surface mounting. The ADT7470ARQZ-REEL meets SMBus 2.0 electrical specifications and supports a fast I2C standard up to 400 kHz.
Applications for this device include servers, networking and telecommunications equipment, and desktops where active cooling and thermal monitoring are critical.
