ADM485JN Description

Short technical summary and product information.

The ADM485JN is a differential line transceiver designed for high-speed bidirectional data communication on multipoint bus transmission lines. It complies with EIA standards RS-485 and RS-422, making it suitable for applications such as low power RS-485 systems, DTE/DCE interfaces, packet switching, and local area networks.

This transceiver operates from a single 5V power supply and features a data rate of up to 5 Mbps. It offers a wide bus common-mode range of -7V to +12V. The device incorporates thermal shutdown and short-circuit protection to prevent damage during fault conditions. Driver propagation delay is typically 10 ns, and receiver propagation delay is typically 15 ns.

Fabricated using BiCMOS technology, the ADM485JN combines low power consumption with fast switching speeds. Its outputs are three-stated when disabled, and it features high-Z outputs with power off. The receiver includes a fail-safe feature that ensures a logic high output if the inputs are left unconnected.

Designed for multipoint bus transmission, up to 32 transceivers can be connected simultaneously on a bus, with the requirement that only one driver is enabled at any time. The ADM485JN's high output impedance when disabled minimizes bus loading.
