The AD8321AR is a low cost digitally controlled variable gain amplifier optimized for coaxial line driving applications such as cable modems designed to the DOCSIS upstream standard. It integrates a low noise fixed gain buffer, a digitally controlled variable attenuator, and a low distortion high power amplifier, all in a single 20-lead SOIC package.
Key electrical characteristics include a gain range of 53.4 dB with a gain step of 0.75 dB/LSB, controlled via an 8-bit serial word over an SPI interface. The device achieves a minimum bandwidth of 235 MHz and maintains a constant 75 ohm output impedance. Typical spurious-free dynamic range (SFDR) is -53 dBc at 42 MHz, driving an output level up to 11 dBm into a 75 ohm load.
The AD8321AR operates from a single 9V supply and over a temperature range of -40°C to +85°C. The surface mount 20-SOIC package (7.50mm width) is suitable for automated assembly. The device supports power-down functionality and accepts differential or single-ended input signals.
