The AD737JR from Analog Devices is a low power, precision monolithic true RMS-to-DC converter. It is designed to compute the true RMS value of AC and DC input voltages, maintaining high accuracy across a wide range of input waveforms, including variable duty cycle pulses and phase-controlled sine waves. With a full-scale input range of 200 mV and high input impedance of 10 TΩ, it interfaces directly with 3½ digit CMOS analog-to-digital converters.
This device operates with a wide power supply range of ±2.5 V to ±16.5 V and consumes a low supply current of 160 µA, making it ideal for battery-powered applications. In power-down mode, the standby supply current is typically 25 µA. The AD737JR is laser trimmed for high accuracy, providing a maximum error of ±0.2 mV ± 0.3% of reading with sine wave inputs. It is available in an 8-SOIC surface mount package.
The AD737JR is suitable for upgrading the performance of non-RMS precision rectifiers due to its higher accuracy at a comparable or lower cost. Its design minimizes output DC offset errors, enhancing compatibility with high input impedance ADCs.
