The A3987SLPTR-T from Allegro MicroSystems is a complete microstepping motor driver with an integrated translator, simplifying operation for bipolar stepper motors. It supports full, half, quarter, and sixteenth step modes, providing precise motor control.
This driver features an output drive capability of 50 V and a continuous output current of 1.5 A. It includes a fixed off-time current regulator that can operate in slow or mixed decay modes, automatically selected to reduce audible motor noise, increase step accuracy, and minimize power dissipation. The device is built using DMOS technology and offers features like low RDS(on) outputs, short-to-ground protection, and crossover-current protection.
Designed for easy implementation, the A3987 requires only a single pulse on the STEP input for each microstep, making it suitable for applications where complex microprocessors are unavailable or overburdened. It operates over a voltage range of 8V to 50V and is supplied in a 24-pin TSSOP package with an exposed thermal pad for enhanced heat dissipation.
Internal circuit protection includes thermal shutdown with hysteresis and undervoltage lockout (UVLO). Synchronous rectification is incorporated to improve power dissipation during PWM operation. The package is lead-free with 100% matte-tin leadframe plating.
