The A3973SLB-T from Allegro Microsystems is a highly integrated dual DMOS full-bridge motor driver designed for bipolar microstepping stepper motors. It provides continuous output currents of up to ±1 A and can operate at voltages ranging from 15V to 35V.
This driver features internal fixed off-time PWM current-control timing circuitry that can be programmed via a serial interface to operate in slow, fast, and mixed current-decay modes. The desired load-current level is set using two 6-bit linear DACs, allowing for flexible torque control across various step methods, from microstepping to full-step drive. Load current is precisely set in 1.56% increments of the maximum value.
The A3973SLB-T incorporates synchronous rectification circuitry, which allows load current to flow through the low Rds(on) of the DMOS output driver during current decay. This eliminates the need for external clamp diodes in most applications, reducing component count and power dissipation. Internal circuit protection includes thermal shutdown with hysteresis, transient-suppression diodes, and crossover-current protection.
Packaged in a 24-lead SOICW with four internally fused leads for enhanced power dissipation, the A3973SLB-T is suitable for surface mount applications. Its inputs are compatible with 3.3V or 5V control signals, and it includes sleep and idle modes for power management.
