The 2N43 is a historic Germanium PNP Alloy Junction Transistor originally developed by General Electric under a military contract and introduced in mid-1953. This low-to-medium power transistor was one of the first junction transistors made commercially by GE.
It features a unique 'top hat' style case, which allowed for a hermetic seal and internal vacuum, ensuring junction protection and high reliability. Early versions used a Black Metal Pinched Top case, while later versions adopted the Black Metal Top Hat style. The transistor measures 1/2"L X 3/8"W X 1/2"H.
The 2N43 was sorted into different performance types, with the 2N43 being high gain, the 2N44 medium gain, and the 2N45 low gain. A special version, the 2N43A, became the first transistor qualified for use by the U.S. Air Force in 1955. These transistors were manufactured in high volume through the 1960s and found widespread use due to their reliability and stable performance in general purpose and audio applications for both commercial and military use.
