The Kester 197 Soldering Flux is a mildly activated rosin liquid flux. It is formulated as a homogeneous solution of high-quality purified Grade WW rosin within a specially blended alcohol vehicle. A very small amount of an extremely effective activating agent is incorporated into the mixture.
Classified as Type ROL1 flux under IPC ANSI/J-STD-004 and formerly QPL approved as Type RMA under MIL-F-14256, the 197 flux offers fluxing ability comparable to highly activated rosin fluxes. However, its residue is considerably less conductive due to a minimum of ionic activating agent, as indicated by its very high water extract resistivity. The rosin residue is non-corrosive, non-conductive, and resistant to moisture and fungus. The dry residue provides insulation against atmospheric corrosion.
This liquid flux is classified as a Category 2 Flammable Liquid and a Category 2 Eye Irritant. It may also cause an allergic skin reaction and drowsiness or dizziness. It is intended for use outdoors or in well-ventilated areas, with precautions taken to prevent static discharges and ignition sources.
