HMS Networks Enables Raspberry Pi 5-Compatible CompactCom Interface

To ensure compatibility with the new Raspberry Pi 5 computer board, HMS Networks has updated the CompactCom system, providing easy expansion to the Pi’s networking capability.

Last year, HMS Networks introduced the Raspberry Pi adapter board, offering manufacturers an easy way to test and evaluate the Anybus CompactCom. This ready-made communication interface connects devices to various industrial networks. HMS Networks has ensured that the AnyBus CompactCom Raspberry Pi Adapter Board will be compatible with the latest Raspberry Pi 5 release which features the new RP1 I/O controller.

What is CompactCom?

The Anybus CompactCom is a family of communication modules developed by HMS Networks. The modules are designed to enable industrial devices to communicate over different networks. They serve as compact and interchangeable communication interfaces that can be integrated into various types of industrial equipment such as robots, drives, and sensors.

HMS Networks has recently made its CompactCom compatible with the new Rasberry Pi 5. Anybus CompactCom modules will provide a convenient solution for OEMs (original equipment manufacturers) looking to add network connectivity to their industrial devices, facilitating communication across various protocols.

CompactCom Network Expansions Now Compatible with Raspberry Pi 5

The original release of the Rasberry Pi adapter board created significant interest from CompactCom users, and HMS Networks wants to expand on that interest by adding Raspberry Pi 5 compatibility. The latest version of the Host Application Example Code (HAEC) can be used with all Raspberry Pi models that incorporate the 40-pin GPIO header. The HAEC is free to download, giving users a communication adapter board for whatever their needs may be.

CompactCom represents a quick and simple way for users to create their industrial device network. This single module grants development access to many different networks including:

    PROFINET
    EtherCAT
    BACnet
    PROFIBUS
    CC-Link
    Ethernet/IP
    DeviceNet

Users gain access by simply connecting to the module containing their chosen network port. The Anybus NP40 network processor is able to funnel all networking needs, protocol stacks, and API towards the microcontroller. The CompactCom then exchanges information with a PLC and any other nodes in the network.

The CompactCom comes in a variety of form factors to suit individual needs. The M40 Module is an all-in-one module that is flexible enough for any network and provides the fastest time to market. Another option is the B40 Brick which encompasses a PCB piggyback board for free connector choice and all Ethernet variants in one board; it is the most economical solution.

Universal Network Integration

HMS Networks has made CompactCom compatible with the latest Raspberry Pi 5, giving users access to a system fully certified by all network associations. This device allows users access to nearly all networks and fieldbuses with a single module. HMS Networks already has 7 million devices installed, with the latest changes allowing for further integration of the system into the user's industrial networks.

Analytics Software Update

In Software AG’s TrendMiner 2023.R4 release, the integration of data sources is simplified to accelerate IT/OT convergence. This builds on improvements that extended support for cloud-based solutions and added the ability to visualize event and batch process data from AspenTech APRM. This 2023.R4 release simplifies connections to ODBC and JDBC data sources. Admins can specify details about time-series data and assign a source a tag. For contextual data, they can add queries to extract the desired information from the data source. The update also includes a new schedule manager which allows admins to configure settings to provide schedules that account for regional, seasonal, or geographical differences.

Incremental encoder for smaller motor shaft sizes

CUI Devices’ Motion and Control Group today announced the introduction of a new model to its AMT incremental encoder family that supports smaller motor shaft sizes from 1 mm to 6.35 mm (1/4 inch). The AMT12 series, based on CUI Devices’ proprietary capacitive ASIC technology, brings the same high levels of durability, accuracy, and immunity to environmental particulates as current AMT encoder models in an even more compact 22.2 x 22.2 x 12.8 mm package. Thanks to its 16 programmable resolutions from 96 to 4096 PPR and low current consumption of 16 mA at 5 V, the AMT12 incremental encoder is ideally suited for a variety of robotics, industrial, and automation applications.

Available in radial or axial orientations, the AMT12 series carries a wide -40 to +125°C operating temperature range and single-ended quadrature A/B output channels. Its digital nature and compatibility with CUI Devices’ AMT Viewpoint software makes the AMT12 encoder highly customizable with the ability to easily configure the resolution and set the zero position.

The AMT12-V kit affords users further flexibility in their design with the support of 8 different sleeve bore sizes from 1 mm to 6 mm and simple mounting tools to assist in the easy installation process onto a motor.

The AMT12 series is available immediately with prices starting at $21.66 per unit at 100 pieces through distribution. Please contact CUI Devices for OEM pricing.

Multifunctional analog I/O

With the EL4374 EtherCAT Terminal, Beckhoff introduces a powerful analog I/O module to increase system flexibility and simplify parts management. The EL4374 is a multipurpose, combined input/output for -10/0 to +10 V or -20/0/+4 to +20 mA signals that can be used for standard automation tasks at a rate of 1 ksps per channel.

The ability to measure such a wide range of signals enables companies to use a single terminal in place of multiple specialized terminals, reducing cost and space requirements in I/O systems. As a result, engineers can easily adapt to evolving application requirements and stock fewer part numbers while improving readiness for unforeseen challenges and future application changes.

The EL4374 terminal combines two analog inputs and two analog outputs in a compact 12-millimeter housing. Engineers can individually parameterize these channels for current or voltage mode using Beckhoff’s TwinCAT 3 automation software. The analog inputs and outputs are digitized with a resolution of 16 bits and transmitted to the higher-level automation device under galvanic isolation.

With a signal measuring range of +107% of the nominal range, the EL4374 terminal also supports commissioning with sensor values in the limit range and evaluation in accordance with NAMUR NE43. The outputs can provide up to 107% of the nominal value. In addition, the high output power allows a load of up to 750 Ω at 20 mA.

Oxyhound process gas analyzer

KECO introduces the OXYHOUND, a highly-efficient process gas analyzer that conducts real-time and continuous oxygen analysis of natural gas, biogas, and other gas streams. Utilizing optical quench luminescence technology for gaseous sampling, this cost-effective analyzer conducts precise oxygen measurements in a gaseous phase (ppmv and % on a molar basis) with no cross-sensitivity with CO2, H2S, NH3 or SO2, sulfate or other ionic species.

The technology of the OXYHOUND is based on the phase modulation of an oxygen-specific luminophore’s luminescent decay time, which enables accurate calculation of oxygen’s partial pressure. The oxygen analyzer measures the phase shift and intensity variation between the excitation light and the fluorescent response. From these measurements, the analyzer’s onboard computer precisely calculates oxygen in real time.

With a user-friendly and low-maintenance design, the OXYHOUND eliminates the need for electrolyte changes or membrane maintenance. Utilizing KECO Cloud Connect, users can remotely monitor the analyzer on any web-connected device using LTE-M. These features as well as its versatility to work as an O2 analyzer or oxygen meter (data logger) make the OXYHOUND an ideal replacement over older technologies like paramagnetic analyzers, electrochemical cells, and in some instances, zirconia and Tunable Diode Laser (TDL)

Built for Division 2 and Zone 2 hazardous locations, the OxyHound operates in a range of environments with contaminant
